They moved quietly, boots sinking into the wet grass, each step measured to avoid sound. Orders were clear: no noise, no mistakes. The jungle carried everything, even the smallest movement, and no one expected a breach of the Orange Star Army’s defenses. A storm the night before had soaked the ground, leaving the young recruits cold and tense.
One of them paused.
He had been conscripted at sixteen, like the others in the 97th Regimental Combat Team, but something felt off. The sky looked wrong. The clouds had shifted, heavy and uneven, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming.
Why wasn’t anyone else reacting?
Training continued as if nothing had changed. The unit pushed forward through the jungle, inexperienced and exposed. He slowed his breathing, scanning ahead, and then he saw it.
Movement.
Dark shapes in the distance.
Before he could react, his receiver crackled to life.
“This is CO Rachel reporting. 97th Regimental Combat Team, we have spotted unidentified military units in the region. Hold your positions.”
He didn’t need confirmation.
He could already see the tanks.
Black.
