North America, 1846–1848.
The Mexican–American War began after years of growing tension between the United States and Mexico over the annexation of the Republic of Texas and competing claims to the Texas–Mexico border. Guided by the belief in Manifest Destiny, many Americans argued that the United States was destined to expand westward to the Pacific Ocean. Mexico, however, continued to regard Texas as rebellious territory and rejected further territorial concessions.
The Republic of Texas had existed as an independent nation from 1836 until joining the United States in 1845, making its annexation one of the principal causes of war. During the conflict, American settlers in Alta California launched the brief Bear Flag Revolt, proclaiming the California Republic before U.S. forces secured the region. Although the California Republic existed for only a few weeks, it represented the collapse of Mexican authority along the Pacific coast.
American armies advanced on multiple fronts, capturing key cities before ultimately occupying Mexico City in 1847. The war concluded with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, through which Mexico ceded vast territories that now include California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico, and portions of several other western states.
This scenario recreates the campaign across western North America, allowing players to command either coalition as they fight for control of the continent.
Fog of War is optional.
Update: Adjusted to be slightly easier for American forces.
Will Manifest Destiny reshape North America once again, or can Mexico preserve its northern frontier?
