Taiwan Strait, Modern Era.
The origins of the Taiwan Strait dispute trace back to the Chinese Civil War. Following the Communist victory in 1949, the government of the Republic of China withdrew to Taiwan, while the People's Republic of China established control over mainland China. Although both governments originally claimed to represent all of China, the Taiwan Strait has remained one of the world's most enduring political and military flashpoints.
Throughout the Cold War, Taiwan became a key strategic partner of the United States in East Asia, while the People's Republic of China consistently maintained that reunification remained a national objective. Despite decades of economic ties and diplomatic engagement, the political status of Taiwan remains unresolved.
This hypothetical scenario imagines a modern cross-strait conflict in which the People's Republic of China launches a large-scale invasion of Taiwan. Naval supremacy, air superiority, amphibious operations, and control of key ports will determine whether Taiwan can repel the assault or whether mainland China can achieve reunification by force. While the scenario is designed around Taiwan's difficult defensive position, players may command either side and shape the outcome.
Will Taiwan preserve its autonomy, or will mainland China achieve reunification?
