China, 1927–1949.
Following the collapse of China's imperial system, the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) briefly united to reunify the nation. That alliance collapsed in 1927, plunging China into a prolonged civil war as both sides struggled for control of the world's most populous nation.
The conflict changed dramatically in 1937, when Japan launched a full-scale invasion of China, beginning the Second Sino-Japanese War—widely regarded as the opening of World War II in Asia. The Nationalists and Communists formed an uneasy alliance against the Japanese, but the war brought immense destruction, widespread atrocities against civilians, and profound suffering across China.
Following Japan's surrender in 1945, the civil war resumed. The Communists, strengthened by captured Japanese equipment and control of key industrial regions in Manchuria, steadily advanced across the mainland. By 1949, the Nationalist government had withdrawn to Taiwan, while the People's Republic of China was proclaimed in Beijing.
This scenario spans the entire conflict, allowing players to command the Nationalists, the Communists, or contend with Imperial Japan as the fate of modern China hangs in the balance.
