Mediterranean Theater, Sicily and Italy, July 1943.
General, our victories in North Africa have opened the door to southern Europe. Today we launch Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily. By seizing the island, we will secure Mediterranean shipping lanes, force Italy out of the war, and establish a base for the liberation of mainland Europe.
Italian defenses remain formidable, while experienced German divisions stand ready to reinforce the island. Our success will depend upon rapid amphibious landings, coordinated naval support, and overwhelming air superiority. Once Sicily falls, the road to mainland Italy will lie open.
The invasion of Sicily triggered the collapse of Benito Mussolini's Fascist government and led Italy to seek an armistice with the Allies. Germany quickly occupied much of the country, transforming Italy into a prolonged and difficult battlefield that tied down significant Axis forces until the end of the war.
Advance boldly, General. Every mile gained in Italy brings us one step closer to the liberation of Europe.
Mission Objectives:
- Secure Sicily and establish a permanent Allied foothold.
- Force Italy from the war.
- Eliminate all Italian and German forces in Italy and the Balkans.
Good luck, General.
— General George S. Patton
