General, the tide of war has begun to turn. While the Soviet Union fights for survival at Stalingrad, our victory at El Alamein has halted Rommel's advance across North Africa. Now the Allies prepare Operation Torch, the first major Anglo-American landing of the European campaign. By opening a new front in North Africa, we can relieve pressure on our Soviet allies and begin the long road toward liberating Europe.
Our immediate objective is to secure the western Mediterranean. Control of Gibraltar gives us access to the sea lanes leading toward Morocco and Algeria, where Allied forces will land to trap Axis armies between advancing British forces from Egypt and newly arriving Allied troops from the west.
Spain remains officially neutral despite its ideological sympathy toward the Axis. We must avoid provoking Spain into entering the war while eliminating Italian naval and military forces threatening our invasion routes.
Victory in North Africa will mark the first major Allied offensive against Axis forces in the European Theater and pave the way for the invasion of Sicily and mainland Italy.
Mission Objectives:
- Secure the western Mediterranean and protect Allied shipping.
- Avoid provoking Spain into the war.
- Relieve pressure on the North African and Eastern Fronts.
- Defeat Italian forces in northern Morocco and throughout the Mediterranean Sea.
Good luck, General.
— Prime Minister Winston Churchill
