Southern European Front, Balkans, April 1941.
General, instability in the Balkans now threatens Germany's southern flank. Before we can launch Operation Barbarossa, we must secure southeastern Europe, protect vital supply routes, and ensure that no Allied foothold remains capable of disrupting our future invasion of the Soviet Union.
Italian operations in Greece have stalled, forcing German intervention. At the same time, the coup in Yugoslavia has overturned a government willing to cooperate with the Axis. Swift action is now required to restore strategic control throughout the region. Our armored forces must rapidly overwhelm Yugoslavia and Greece before Britain can reinforce its remaining positions.
Although the campaign is expected to be brief, the occupation of the Balkans will ignite determined resistance movements that will tie down Axis forces throughout the war. Nevertheless, securing the region remains essential before Germany can turn east toward the Soviet Union.
Advance quickly, General. Victory in the Balkans will secure our southern flank and clear the way for the greatest military campaign in history.
Mission Objectives:
- Secure Yugoslavia and Greece.
- Support Italian advances where necessary.
- Eliminate all Allied resistance.
- Prepare the Balkans for the launch of Operation Barbarossa.
Good luck, General.
— Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel
