Eastern European Front, Northeast Europe, November 1939.
General, the Soviet Union has demanded territory along our eastern frontier and control of strategic islands in the Gulf of Finland. We have refused these demands, and now the Red Army has invaded our homeland. Though greatly outnumbered, Finland will defend its independence with courage, determination, and intimate knowledge of the frozen terrain.
Britain and France have pledged support, but political circumstances and German pressure on Norway and Sweden have prevented meaningful assistance from reaching us. For now, Finland must stand alone. Make full use of the Mannerheim Line, the harsh winter, and your superior defensive positions to blunt the Soviet advance.
The Winter War became one of the first major conflicts of World War II, demonstrating that determined defenders could inflict severe losses on a far larger army. Yet even a successful defense came at tremendous human cost, and the eventual peace forced Finland to cede territory despite preserving its independence.
Hold the line, General. Drive the Soviet invaders back before they can reinforce their armies from the Far East.
Mission Objectives:
- Defeat the initial Soviet offensive.
- Prevent Soviet expansion into the Baltic region, including Sweden and Estonia.
- Eliminate all Soviet forces within 38 days before major reinforcements arrive.
Good luck, General.
— Field Marshal Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim
