What Is MK64 Switch?

MK64 Switch is an organized Mario Kart 64 Nintendo Switch Online competitive community founded in July 2022 by Gumby, YoyoYoshi (Bobby), SpacedCowboy (Jesse K), and GG.

It started with a practical problem: people wanted to race Mario Kart 64 online, but they needed an easier way to find opponents.

The Discord gave players somewhere to ask for games. Repeated matches were followed by tournaments, leagues, Elo rankings, player records, broadcasts, and CampKart events in Missouri.

Today, MK64 Switch centers on live Grand Prix (GP) and VS competition played through Nintendo Switch Online. Veterans who have played Mario Kart 64 for decades race alongside returning players and competitors who entered organized MK64 through the Switch era itself.

GP and VS Are Different Games

MK64 Switch does not treat every form of Mario Kart 64 competition as interchangeable.

In 2P Grand Prix, two players race through cups while managing pace, items, mistakes, track knowledge, and direct interaction with one opponent. Results can accumulate across individual matches, league seasons, Elo ratings, and tournaments.

4P VS creates a different environment. Three opponents, heavier traffic, item interactions, positioning decisions, and rapidly changing races reward skills that do not always produce the same player hierarchy as GP.

Some competitors perform strongly in both formats while others have better records in one. GP and VS therefore maintain separate results, rankings, and competitive histories.

Relationship to the Older MK64 Community

Mario Kart 64 competition predates Nintendo Switch Online. Long before the MK64 Switch Discord existed, players were already competing through console multiplayer, Time Trials, speedrunning, emulator play, tournaments, and the long-established world-ranking community centered around mariokart64.com.

Nintendo Switch Online added an official online version of the game with live multiplayer access. The MK64 Switch community developed alongside, rather than replacing, the older Time Trial, speedrunning, and console scenes.

The Switch group includes longtime players, people returning after years away, competitors from Time Trials and other MK64 scenes, and players whose first organized MK64 competition came through Nintendo Switch Online.

Some players participate in both the Switch and traditional Time Trial scenes, but the formats measure different performance. Time Trials record individual lap or course speed, while four-player VS adds opponents, traffic, items, positioning, and recovery.

From Discord Matches to CampKart

Organized competition expanded quickly. The first major 2P Grand Prix tournament began in September 2022, with Tom defeating Gumby for the championship. Grand Prix League Season 1 followed that November, and 2023 added Elo ratings, Ultimate Karter, Ultimate Prospect, and the first major four-player VS tournament, won by Patalus.

In September 2024, players traveled to Missouri for CampKart 1, where SpacedCowboy won both GP and VS. Gumby swept both formats at CampKart 2 the following year as the online community developed a recurring in-person branch.

What the MK64 Switch Hub Does

The MK64 Switch Hub publishes competition records outside Discord.

Recorded races feed searchable match history and standings. Player pages show records and statistics, while tournament pages preserve brackets, winners, and event results.

History and rules pages explain earlier competition, league formats, ranking systems, and tournaments, while standings, matches, broadcasts, tournament pages, and player profiles track current and recent results.
